AMMAN — Senate President Faisal Fayez on Saturday called on politicians and parliamentarians to search for solutions to the current global challenges.

Delivering a speech during the 11th conference of the Association of Senates, Shoora and Equivalent Councils in Africa and the Arab World, Fayez called for the addressing of problems related to hunger and high poverty rates, as well as conflicts that result in the forcible migration and the killing of innocent people, women and children, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.

The two-day conference in the Moroccan capital of Rabat addressed two main themes: Cooperation and Afro-Arab solidarity as the basis for urban upgrading and development. This comes in the context of the repercussions of the COVID-19 pandemic, and youth and women at the centre of development policies and sustainable investments.

The Senate president also called to enhance coordination among various parliamentary institutions to reach commonalities to help face crises endured by all of humanity.

He also highlighted the importance of enhancing cooperation among African, Arab, Latin and Caribbean countries, and supporting various initiatives that involve joint action among these countries to face multiple challenges related to geopolitical changes.

Fayez expressed his surprise towards the descriptions of northern countries as“rich” and southern countries as“poor” at a time when African, Arab, Latin and Caribbean countries have strategic natural resources and expertise in various fields.

These countries also enjoy economic strengths that, if utilised to their maximum potential, would help address several economic problems, such as poverty and unemployment, he added.

The Senate president also stressed the need to have a parliamentary forum to enhance parliamentary diplomacy, boost parliamentary cooperation and create new spaces for cooperation. He added that this forum can be used as a platform to deliver these countries' stances towards international issues.
