Ukraine Special Forces are providing self-defense training to residents as forces from Russia hover just over the border. A 79-year-old Ukrainian woman is among those preparing to protect her homeland. Valentyna Konstantynovska, a resident of Mariupol, took part in military training on Sunday to learn how to defend herself.
Valentyna told local media,“I am ready to shoot if something happens. I will defend my home, my city, my children. I will do this because I think I'm ready for it.”
She further stated“I don't want to lose my country, my city. I underwent this training but I probably won't be a very valid soldier because my body doesn't serve me that much anymore. And the weapon is too heavy for me.”
100,000 Russian soldiers at Ukraine border
Members of the Ukrainian special forces team are overseeing the training. Some of the trainers were wearing the Azov Battalion's emblem. The session contained instructions on how to create and disassemble a gun, load ammunition, and aim at a target. Russia does not plan to invade Ukraine. However, it has more than 100,000 soldiers stationed near the Ukrainian border. It has also dispatched more troops to Belarus for training.
The US asserts that Russia has all of the necessary troops in place to undertake military action at any time, but Russia has constantly denied such intentions.
Kyrylo Berkal, a member of the special forces team, said telling diplomats to leave Ukraine was the correct decision because the situation could be“dangerous for them”. He added that people in Ukraine should not panic, because allies would still help them.“My message is that we must take more actions to stop Russian invasion together,” he added.
However, the threat is taken seriously, though, because Russia descended upon Ukraine and annexed its land in 2014. Ukraine's president has urged the West to refrain from spreading“panic.”
