Sue is Professor of Sociology and Director of CIRCLE (Centre for International Research on Care, Labour and Equalities), a Faculty of Social Sciences research centre based in the Interdisciplinary Centre for the Social Sciences at the University of Sheffield. She is a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences.

She is Principal Investigator, ESRC Centre for Care (2021-2026, grant reference ES/W002302/1), founding Editor-in-Chief, International Journal of Care and Caring and Deputy Director of 'IMPACT' (Improving Adult Care Together), the Health Foundation/ESRC Evidence Implementation Centre (2021- ).

Sue joined the University of Sheffield in October 2015 after almost ten years at the University of Leeds, where CIRCLE was established in 2007. Her career has also included periods studying, teaching and researching at the Universities of Bradford, Kent, Durham, Swansea, Nottingham Trent and Sheffield Hallam.

Between 2017 and 2021 Sue was Principal Investigator, Sustainable Care: connecting people and systems (ESRC, Grant reference ES/P009255/1). Her research and scholarship focus on the relationship between work and care, on how social and employment policies affect how women and men manage caring roles and responsibilities throughout the life course, and on the role of technology in supporting older and disabled people, carers and their networks.

She also specialises in comparative international analysis of care arrangements and in evaluating the impact of carer support initiatives. Sue has led over 40 externally funded research projects and has published widely on care, caring, gender and work.

She participates in many international collaborations and is honoured in her many connections to the carers' movement around the world and to work closely with Carers UK and Eurocarers, where she is a member of the Research Working Group.
