Doha: The magnificent Al Bayt Stadium, a FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 venue, will welcome fans for the first time on Tuesday, November 30, when it hosts the FIFA Arab Cup opening match between Qatar and Bahrain.

It's a proud moment for Dr. Nasser Al Hajri, Manager of the Al Bayt Stadium.

Al Hajri expressed his belief that the inauguration will be an amazing event and will impress everyone.

Al Bayt (which means home in Arabic) features a mesmerising design inspired by the tents traditionally used by nomadic people across the Gulf region. The 60,000-capacity venue will be the largest stadium used during the FIFA Arab Cup and will also host the tournament's final match on December 18, when Qatar will also celebrate its National Day.

On the significance of the design, Al Hajri said it was inspired by bayt al sha'ar the traditional tents used by people across the region. He said the design illustrates Qatar's history, culture and heritage. He highlighted that the design represents not only Qatar but also the wider region.

On sustainability features the stadium has, he said that the project used solar energy for lighting around the stadium, took care to recycle waste and used recycled water for irrigation.

“We also recycled some of the materials found during the drilling phase. For instance, we used the rocks found during drilling in the construction of the two large restaurants surrounding the stadium. We also used telephone poles from Ooredoo during the construction of the restaurants, while other materials were recycled and used for sculptures in and around the stadium,” he added.

On the stadium's legacy, He said that the stadium is currently one of the biggest of the world.

However, he noted that following the conclusion of the World Cup next year, 30,000 seats will be removed and the vacated area will be turned into exhibition and wedding halls, to serve the needs of the Al Khor and Al Thakhira communities.

“It really is a one-of kind development in the world. It has superb facilities, including a hotel with 96 rooms. Post-2022, the hotel will have two cinema theatres, a shopping mall and a recreation and food hall,” he said.
