New confrontations between South Sudan’s oppositions factions leave 20 dead

(MENAFN) On Tuesday, Sep. 14 an official affirmed that over 20 soldiers were confirmed dead in new confrontations on Monday between fighting factions of South Sudan's opposition group -- the Sudan People's Liberation Movement/Army-in opposition (SPLM/A-IO).

Three senior military officers were amongst those who died in the fighting that took place at Morjala and Gazal locale of Upper Nile state with another SPLA-IO splinter outfit, stated Lam Paul Gabriel, spokesman for the SPLA-IO under First Vice President Riek Machar.

The new confrontations occurred after the breakaway SPLM/A-IO faction headed by Machar's former chief of staff Simon Gatwech Dual on August 4 fought at Magenis with soldiers loyal to the latter, leaving 34 soldiers dead.

Dual's faction had held Machar responsible of bias and undermining its hand in the transitional unity administration formed in February 2020.
