(MENAFN- Kashmir Observer) Smriti Irani Announces New Courses On Technical Textiles

Srinagar: National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) Srinagar Friday celebrated its first-ever Convocation at SKICC. The ceremony was held for its first batch of 31 students.

The event was attended by Smriti Irani, Union Minister Of Textile and Minister of Women and Child Development as Chief Guest, Minister of State, Youth Affairs and Sports and Minority Affairs Kiren Rijiju, Lieutenant Governor J & K Manoj Sinha were the Guests of Honour.

Irani on the occasion announced the introduction of new courses on technical textiles at the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) Srinagar. She also said that the students who want to try their luck should go through the Jammu and Kashmir Industrial Policy thoroughly.

'The challenge is that this campus (Srinagar campus) and those across the country don't have a specially dedicated team for technical textiles. That's why I find it quite privileged to announce that NIFT will have a course on technical textiles at its few campuses including Srinagar,' Irani said.

Irani said India in the past five years has seen an increase of 35 percent in the production of silk. 'We are in the position to be self-sufficient completely in the production of silk in next two years, which means currently we are at number two after China and after two years we will be completely self-sufficient and not depend on any country for raw material. India is the number one jute producer of the world as well,' she said.

'If we talk about employment generation only in the sector of silk, we have seen a 20 per cent increase in employment opportunities. In past three to four years, Textile ministry has been focusing of technical textiles, which helps in producing rocket components, bullet proof jackets and other related things,' she said.

'According the recent budget presented by the government, there is capital expenditure possibilities of around Rs 3 lakh Crore and of which technical textile designers, manufactures have a huge domestic market that we can capture,' she added Dr Javed Ahmed Wani, Director NIFT Srinagar presented academic report of the NIFT Srinagar. He informed the gathering that the permanent campus of NIFT Srinagar shall be made functional from this year which will have world-class facilities for education and research.

All speakers congratulated the graduates and wished them luck for future endeavours.

In this ceremony 3 students from each department were awarded with certificates and gold medals for their innovation and creativity reflected in the graduation projects. Furthermore, awards of academic, artistic and athletic excellence were awarded to 4 students for their outstanding overall performances. The function was attended by many academicians, state functionaries as well as representatives and students of various schools.
