Afghanistan- MoE: Dept. of Islamic Studies Revived

    • Under the Ministry of Education in accordance to a presidential decree, Islamic studies department has revived.

      Previously, it was decided by the Ministry of Education to merge four small departments, including Islamic Studies department, where the decision faced backlash from people, political parties, civil society and parliament.

      MoE sent drafts to the Parliament, one about creating executive board of Islamic studies and another on reviving the department, statement, lawmakers, Ulema and people suggested revival of the department, MoE statement read.

      Earlier, MoE said in a statement that Islamic Studies is aimed to be given a central place, which is a major and crucial step that includes mosques in the educational ecosystem.

      With this plan the stigma about Islamic studies with Madrassas will be removed; this requires a step-by-step plan to bring Islamic studies to schools, the statement read.

      According to reports, replaced deputy minister's office for Islamic studies with the directorate of Islamic studies, the directorate will have much greater authority and will be responsible for Islamic subjects from 1st to 12th grade.
