Afghanistan- Khalilzad, Taliban leaders to discuss 'challenges in implementing the U.S.-Taliban agreement'
(MENAFN- Khaama Press) The U.S. envoy for Afghan peace Zalmay Khalilzad left for Doha, the capital city of Qatar, to discuss the challenges in implementing the U.S.-Taliban peace agreement.
The State Department in a statement said "Special Representative for Afghanistan Reconciliation Ambassador Zalmay Khalilzad departed on April 12 for travel to Doha."
The statement further added "In Doha, Ambassador Khalilzad will meet with Taliban representatives on April 13 to discuss current challenges in implementing the US-Taliban Agreement."
The travel takes place shortly after the Afghan government and Taliban released prisoners aimed at launching the intra-Afghan talks.
Counter-terrorism assurances, ceasefire, troop withdrawal and intra-Afghan talks were among the key issues which the U.S. and Taliban representatives had in-depth discussions on before signing the agreement.
However, the Taliban militants continue to their attacks in the restive parts of the country despite ongoing efforts to end the conflict through negotiated political settlement.
