NATO, Italy concerned about Turkey's military offensive in N. Syria


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) ROME, Oct 9 (KUNA) -- Italia's Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte and NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg on Wednesday voiced concerns over the repercussions of the Turkish military attack in northeastern Syria.
This came in a joint news conference held between Conte and Stoltenberg in Italy's Palazzo Chigi, commenting on Turkey's launch of the military operation in northeastern Syria.
Conte expressed his worry about the unilateral Turkish move which may lead to further destabilization of the region.
Meanwhile, Stoltenberg said the Turkish authorities informed NATO about the military operation in northeastern Syria.
He stressed the importance of avoiding acts which destabilize the region, and increase tensions and humanitarian sufferings.
It is clear that Turkey has concerns over its security, and suffered much from terrorist attacks, he said.
He noted that Turkey is a hosting country of million Syrian refugees.
Earlier in the day, Turkey's army announced that it began a ground offensive as part of the "Operation Peace Spring" in northern Syria. (end)
