Doha: The Emergency Department of Hamad General Hospital (HGH) expects an increase in number of patients of Ramadan-related health problems like gastric, renal diseases and heat exhaustion by 15 to 20 percent, said an official.

'The Emergency Department sees 1,200 to 1,500 patients usually in a day throughout the year, Dr Yousif Eltayeb, Consultant Emergency Medicine at Hamad General Hospital told The Peninsula. He said that some cases of road accidents are also reported during month of Ramadan which take place due to hurry of motorist for Iftar.

Dr Eltayeb advised fasting people to take light Iftar with water, date, juice and soup. 'The main course, dinner should be taken by midnight. Suhoor should be also very light like laban and dates, said Dr Eltayeb. Suhoor is the meal consumed early in the morning by Muslims before dawn during Ramadan.

Patients are also advised to consult with their physicians before fasting and take the medicines accordingly. 'I advise patients to take their medication at the time of Iftar and Suhoor but this will be in consultation with their treating physicians, said Dr Eltayeb.

People who fast are also advised to avoid taking unnecessary coffee, tea and carbonated drinks in large quantity. Dr Eltayeb said that fasting people can do light physical exercises in the morning in closed door cold place. 'It is not advisable for fasting people to do exercise in open during day time because hot weather increases the amount you sweat and the amount of fluid you lose causing dehydration, said Dr Eltayeb.

HMC has also previously advised people to avoid salty food, sugary and caffeinated drinks, and heavy fatty foods, which can cause gastrointestinal disturbances.

People were also asked to keep hydrated, choose healthy options like small portions of low-calorie, nutrient-dense food such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains and lean meats for Iftar and Suhoor.
