Sri Lanka- PM says talks with TNA based on APRC proposals

(MENAFN- Colombo Gazette) Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe says the United National Party (UNP) is having talks with the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) based on the proposals of the All Party Representative Committee (APRC).

He says the UNP has not reached any agreement on devolution of powers but is only discussing what was put forward by the APRC, which was formed by former President Mahinda Rajapaksa.

The Prime Minister expressed these views while speaking at an event during a visit to Jaffna today.

The Prime Minister said that talks are underway to ensure a political solution to the National issue through a new Constitution.

However he said that a draft Constitution has not yet been prepared.

The Prime Minister noted that the very people who backed the APRC proposals on power devolution when Rajapaksa was President are now against it.

Wickremesinghe said that the Tamils in the North supported moves in 2015 to establish democracy in the country.

He said that the rights of the Tamils must be protected like the rights of others are protected in other parts of the country.

The Prime Minister also assured the Tamil community that all their concerns will be addressed by the UNP-led Government. (Colombo Gazette)
