Malaysia's king abruptly steps down

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 6 (KUNA) -- Malaysia's King Muhammad V resigned on Sunday without citing reasons, the first time a monarch has vacated his throne before the end of a five-year tenure.
The resignation of Malaysia's 15th king took effect immediately, the National Palace said in a statement, without providing any justification.
"His Highness has worked towards fulfilling his responsibilities entrusted to him as the head of state, serving as a pillar of stability, source of justice and the core of unity," the statement said.
Malaysia has nine royal households, who typically alternate to sit on the throne. (end) aab.nam
