Doha: The National Command Center hosted Hamad Medical Corporation's (HMC) blood donation vehicle recently in front of its headquarters in the Al Duhail area. The initiative was part of the community partnership between HMC and the National Command Center. The event was held as part of the upcoming Qatar National Day celebrations and promoted the importance of voluntary blood donation. Representatives from the National Command Center and HMC's Ambulance Service participated in the event.

Abdulaziz Al Yafei, Assistant Executive Director of HMC's Ambulance Service, said the event was a joint effort on the part of a large number of employees. He noted that voluntary blood donation is important for the overall health of the community. 'Blood donation saves the lives of thousands of patients every year. A single blood donation can save the lives of patients with cancer, hemorrhagic disorders, thrombocytopenia, and blood diseases. It is used in the treatment of anemia and the care of individuals who have been the victim of major physical trauma, or who have been in a fire or road accident. Blood donation is an essential part of caring for both children and adults who are undergoing surgery, including organ transplantation, and of those requiring surgery as part of their treatment for diseases like cancer. Every day blood donation saves the lives of patients who are being treated for a variety of medical conditions, said Al Yafei.

He added that donating blood does not just benefit recipients. He said there are health benefits for donors as well, including lowering one's risk of heart disease and heart attack through reducing blood viscosity.
