KIMS Oman Hospital and MoH launch patient safety initiative

(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) Muscat- A Patient Safety Friendly Hospital Initiative (PSFHI) has been launched at KIMS Oman Hospital in collaboration with Ministry of Health (MoH), Director General of Quality Assurance Centre and the World Health Organisation (WHO).

The programme was inaugurated by the Dr Sheriff Sahadulla, chief executive officer, KIMS Healthcare Group, in the presence of Mohammed Ahmed al Busaidi, assistant to Wali Mattrah, Dr Houssam Akoum, chief operating officer at KOH, Samra al Barwani, Dr Safana al Saidi and Dr Mariyam Tubila of MoH. In his opening remarks, Dr Sahadulla emphasised on the importance of patient safety in the healthcare sector. He highlighted that the incidence rate of adverse events in the travel industry is one in a million whereas in the healthcare it is one in 300.

Thus, billions of dollars of healthcare expenditure is due to medical error. He urged the private health care providers, organisations and MoH in Oman to work collaboratively to set standards in providing high quality care in a patient safe environment. Initiatives, such as the PSFHI, are the first step towards that goal.

PSFHI is a WHO initiative aimed at assisting institutions to launch comprehensive patient safety programmes. The entire programme is divided into five modules - Leadership and Management, Patient and Public Involvement, Safe Evidence-based Clinical Practice, Safe Environment and Life Long Learning. All together, 139 standards are being defined to be met under these five domains.

KOH had always been a part of patient safety drives and remains the first hospital in Oman to be awarded with the ACHSI certificate for Quality.
