(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) Muscat- The sultanate, represented by the State Council, on Tuesday will host a ceremony to celebrate the publication of a document on the protection and development of the Arab environment.

The event will be held under the patronage of H E Mohammed bin Salim bin Said al Toobi, Minister of Environment and Climate Affairs, stated a press release.

It will be held in the presence of H E Dr Yahya bin Mahfoudh al Mantheri, State Council Chairman, Dr Mishaal bin Fahm al Salami, speaker of the Arab Parliament, Tariq al Habib, Minister of Environment of Lebanon, and a number of members of the Arab Parliament, and members of the State Council and Majlis A'Shura.

Dr Khalid bin Salim al Saidi, secretary general of the State Council, highlighted the importance of hosting the celebration.

He considered the choice of sultanate to launch the document as an affirmation of its role in supporting joint Arab action and appreciation of its efforts in the field of environmental protection. The document, which includes 18 articles, is a reference document to guide the development of legislation, policies and plans, and propose appropriate activities and mechanisms to protect the Arab environment.

Dr Saidi stressed that the values of Islam attach great importance to the preservation of the environment, in addition to the link between the environment and natural resources and the concept of sustainable development with its economic and social sides.

Dr Saidi said that the document identifies the dangers facing the Arab environment in order to drive home the concept of environmental security within the pillars of Arab national security.

The Arab Parliament approved the document at the 29th Arab Summit in Saudi Arabia in mid-April as an Arab reference document in the field of environment.

The Arab Parliament pointed out that the sultanate was chosen to host the ceremony of the publication of the document, in recognition of its efforts in taking utmost care of the environment among most Arab countries and it being placed among the top ten in the world in this area.
