Qatar clinch Asian Beach Volleyball title

Bangkok: The Qatari team consisting of Ahmed Tijan and Cherif Younousse, were crowned the Asian Beach Volleyball championship in Satun, Thailand yesterday.

The Qatari duo got the better of Iranian duo of Bahman Salemi and Arash Vakili 2-0 (21-18, 21-11) in the final match.

In the women's category, Australian Clancy/Artacho Del Solar beat Chinese Wang/Xue 2-1(21-17, 19-21, 15-9) to win the title.

Iran had won the title of the previous edition, beating Indonesia in the final match.

This is the second major title for Ahmed and Cherif having won the Asian Games Beach Volleyball title in Indonesia this year in August.

At the Asian Games Qatari pair defeated the Indonesian pair of Mohammad Ashfiya and Ade Rachmawan The Asian Beach Volleyball Championships is an international beach volleyball competition in Asia and Oceania contested by the double-gender beach volleyball of the members of Asian Volleyball Confederation. The twin wins will help the Qatari duo's bid to earn a direct qualification to the finals of the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games.

The winners complete the Bangkok tournament with an all-win record.

In the group stage the Qatari team managed to lead the group after winning three consecutive matches against Saudi Arabia 2-0 (21-12 and 21-14) and Singapore 2-0 (21-15 and 21-11) and against Oman 2-0 (21-19 and 21-18).

Qatar team entered the final of the event with a convincing 21-15, 21-14 win over Kazakhstans Alexey Sidorenko amd Alexandr Dyachenko.
