Oman- Cargo building inaugurated at Salalah airport


(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) Muscat- Oman Airport Services Company opened its cargo building on Wednesday at Salalah International Airport with H E Dr Ahmed bin Mohammed al Futaisi, Minister of Transport and Communications, in attendance.

The opening was also attended by Dr Mohammed bin Nasser al Za'abi, CEO of the Public Authority for Civil Aviation, and Abdullah bin Aqeel al Ibrahim, acting deputy governor of Dhofar.

According to H E Dr Futaisi, the civil aviation sector in Oman has witnessed great progress in the past few years with several important and modern facilities opening. In a statement, the minister said that the operations of the air cargo terminal at Salalah International Airport will complement existing and new facilities which is important for marketing of air cargo.

He added that the air cargo building was designed to international standards in addition to being equipped with the latest systems and technology. The facility was also designed factoring in Port of Salalah and Salalah Free Zone, which have made the city an important logistics hub in international trade.

H E Dr Futaisi noted that Oman Aviation Group worked on the formulation of an air cargo strategy in Oman with the objective of reaching a handling capacity of 730,000 tonnes of air cargo annually by 2030 from the current capacity of 210,000 tonnes. Za'abi said that the air cargo terminal project came up in three years at a cost of RO34mn.

Oman Aviation Services Company started receiving shipping orders from the new building at 8am on Wednesday, while at 10.30am, the new facility received its first cargo flight. The first cargo flight left at 11.20am.

The new air cargo building is one of a series of projects attached to the development of Muscat International Airport and Salalah International Airport.
