Nine countries fail at Asiad

DOHA: Nine participating countries will return home without winning any medals at the 2018 Asian Games.

Thirty seven nations secured medals during the 18th Asiad while athletes from Bangladesh, Bhutan, Brunei Darussalam, The Maldives, Oman, Palestine, Sri Lanka, Timor Leste and Yemen failed to win any.

Among them, Sri Lanka sent the biggest contingent which consisted of 172 athletes to Indonesia, went medal-less at the Asiad for the fourth time in the history.

Sri Lankan athletes made it to six finals, but did not succeed in securing podium finishes in any of those occasions. They came close to securing a silver in rugby sevens, but went down to strong Japanese team in the semi-final 12-10 in one of the most thrilling encounters of the tournament and later lost to South Korea in the bronze medal match.

Bangladesh sent 117 athletes to compete in 14 events while Bhutan sent 24 of their athletes who competed in golf, archery, taekwondo and boxing.

Meanwhile, 15 athletes from Brunei Darussalam also participated in seven events as the 116-member Maldivian contingent also failed to make an impact.

Oman (46), Palestine (46), Timor Leste (67) and Yemen (37) also did not enter the medal tally.
