(MENAFN) Ennahda on Friday condemned statements made by the Mayor of Le Kram, north of the capital Tunis, against President Beji Caid Essebsi.
The Tunisian party said it denounced "statements made by lawyer Fathi Laayouni, the mayor of Le Kram, on Thursday related to the head of state."
Laayouni had said that Essebsi seriously "violated" the constitution when he "attacked the identity of the people and the state" as stipulated in article 1 of the Constitution.
As a result, he added, the president had become "vulnerable to isolation".
He called on MPs to submit a petition to exempt the president from his duties.
