India's top court bans Islamic instant divorce

(MENAFN) On Tuesday, India's top court had banned the practice of Islamic instant divorce locally called Triple Talaq, after considering it an unconstitutional and 'un-Islamic'.

The Triple Talaq practice is where a Muslim authorized to divorce his wife by uttering the word 'Talaq' which means divorce.

The court decision came after five Muslim women were divorced this way, and two rights groups also petitioned in the apex court seeking an end of the custom.
