Kuwaitis win 3 film awards


(MENAFN- Arab Times) ABU DHABI, Oct 21, (KUNA): Kuwait has grabbed three awards in the Third Gulf Film Festival, concluded in Abu Dhabi Thursday.

The Kuwaiti movie 'Habeeb Al-Ardh', directed by Ramadan Khesro, snatched the first place in the long narrative movies category, the jury announced at the closing ceremony.

In the animation movies category, Kuwaiti movie 'Sandra', which directed by Yusuf Al-Bakhshi came first and Kuwaiti documentary movie 'We Die to Live Kuwait' directed by Ali Hassan ranked second in the long documentary movies category.

The festival kicked off on Sunday with the participation of Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Bahrain and the hosts UAE.

It included the following awards for the best long documentary, short documentary, filming of a documentary movie, narrative movie, narrative short movie, narrative long movie, filming of a narrative movie, soundtrack, and best actor and actress.

'Habeeb Al-Ardh' has drawn much applause for depicting real sacrifices for the homeland.

The Kuwaiti movie (or lover of the land) has all the ingredients for success as a cinematic work, said Dr Habib Ghloom, the festival general coordinator, in a statement to Kuwait News Agency.

The movie portrayed in a magnificent fashion deep meanings of faithfulness and sacrifices for the homeland, said Ghloom, who is also a popular UAE actor.

Ghloom expressed pleasure for participation of the Kuwaiti veteran actor, Abdelhussein Abdulredha.

Jassem Al-Nabhan, also a famous Kuwaiti actor, expressed pleasure for the good impact the Kuwaiti movie left on the audience, noting that it was product of creative young movie makers.

Fatma Al-Husseinan, a cinematic observer at Kuwait National Council of Culture, Arts and Letters, said most of the critics and attendees expressed admiration at the Kuwaiti movie.

Winning the three awards at the festival affirms that the Kuwaiti cinema occupies a distinguished status at the regional level, she said.

For his part the movie director, Khesro, expressed satisfaction for winning the award, noting that cinematic works from the other GCC countries competed strongly in the festival.

The movie narrates life of the late Kuwaiti poet Faek Abduljelil and his contributions to development of the Kuwaiti theater. The poet, who was also a composer of songs, died after he was taken hostage by the Iraqi occupiers of Kuwait.

Khesro lauded the producer, Sheikha Intisar Salem Al-Ali Al-Sabah, who had given unlimited support for this distinctive work.

In the animation movies category, Kuwaiti movie 'Sandra', which was directed by Yusuf Al-Bakhshi came first and Kuwaiti documentary movie 'We Die to Live Kuwait' ranked second in the long documentary movies category.
