UN envoy in Oman as part of mission to settle Yemeni crisis

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) MUSCAT, Sept 4 (KUNA) -- The UN special envoy for Yemen Ismail Ould sheikh Ahmed held talks here on Sunday with the Sultanate's Official in Charge of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf bin Alawi bin Abdullah, the official Omani news agency said.

OMNA said talks between the two sides focused on ongoing diplomatic efforts by the envoy and the UN to try settle the strife in Yemen.

Sheikh Ahmed arrived in the Sultanate earlier today.

There was no further official word about his mission, however media reports have indicated that Oman is seeking to pave way for new rounds of talks among the warring Yemeni parties to settle the conflict.

Kuwait has recently hosted marathon talks at this level, however the diplomatic process snagged, while the opposition, namely Ansarullah and the camp of the ex-president Ali Abdullah Saleh, took measures that further complicated it -- namely proclaiming a joint council to rule areas under their control.

The opposition had also arranged a parliamentary session without representation from the camp of the legitimate government of Abd Rabbu Mansour Hadi. (end) ahr.rk
