Omani students studying abroad showcased their innovative research projects at the first Omani expo 2016 held at Sultan Qaboos University (SQU) on Wednesday.

Held under the patronage of H E Eng Salim bin Nasser al Aufi, Undersecretary in the Ministry of Oil and Gas, and hosted by ten Omani undergraduate students from Oregon State University in the US, the expo attracted lots of curious students as well as professionals in different fields.

'The idea of an exhibition started in January this year with a view to target scholarship students to showcase their innovations, inventions and scientific researches in different specialisations such as engineering, science, mathematics, hygiene and environment,' said one of the organisers.

Mohamed bin Saleh al Naamani, a chemical engineer who graduated from Oregon State University in the US, said, 'My project, which I worked on with my colleagues Evan, Howard, Hurley and Rahal, is titled, 'Tablet Driven Microfluidic Platform for Cell Counting'.

'As you might have guessed from the title, it is a mobile microfluidic device that can count cells, or in the case of the average consumer, analyse the biological components for mechanism of bodily fluid.'

He added his team was invited to work on this state-of-the-art technology while it was in research and development, and the team designed and conducted tests aimed at modeling the system and improving its performance.

He also talked about corporations that are willing to adopt the technology.

'The aim of the project is to lower the costs and increase convenience of healthcare diagnostics and provide solution to you right at home,' Naamani added.

Juhina Said al Shamsi, a graduate in emergency administration and planning from the University of North Texas in the US, carried out a case study titled, 'Emergency Operation Centers: May 2015 Texas Flooding and Flooding in Oman'.

She explained what an emergency operations centre (EOC) is.

'It is a facility where tremendous amount of coordination takes place in terms of disaster preparedness and emergency management. Adequate disaster response action heavily depends on an office coordination, number of activation hours and advanced technologies.'

She said the importance of the study is how Oman can benefit from the EOC in the US.

Lubna al Azri who graduated from the University of Nebraska- Lincoln in the US, worked on minerals analysis and titled her study, 'Iron Mobility in Desert Sandstone Aquifers'.

'The major practical significance of this study involved water quality. The movement of iron sandstone aquifers can drastically change groundwater chemistry, and understanding how and when this movement takes place will help in locating safe supplies of drinking water,' Lubna said.
