Comic-Con International opens in San Diego

(MENAFN- Gulf Times) Thousands of superheroes, Jedi knights, time travelers and cartoon villains thronged the streets of San Diego on Thursday, for the opening of the Comic-Con International, billed as the biggest pop culture convention in the world.

The four-day convention draws more than 130,000 fans to the city's convention centre, many of whom are dressed in elaborate costumes based on characters from hit film, TV and game series.

Originally a meeting for comic book art and artists, the convention has grown in recent years into a major showcase for popular movie and TV show franchises, who use Comic-Con as a forum to pitch and preview new productions to fans.

Among the hundreds of panels and fan events, this year's convention features a preview of the upcoming Star Wars: The Force Awakens by director JJ Abrams, appearances by stars of the television series Game of Thrones and Doctor Who, and autographs by Spider-Man creator Stan Lee.

Comic-Con International closes tomorrow.
