UNODC Chief Says Confront Criminals And Advance Justice -3

(MENAFN- QNA) United Nations Economic and Social Council President Martin Sajdik said, "We have an opportunity to reinforce the insights that arose from the debates at the General Assembly held in New York in February.

"Rule of law and fundamental human rights empower our societies and they can help to drive development for all. In the absence of these bedrock principles our world and the lives of the people on this planet would be different. Our great challenge is to ensure that we use these principles to promote sustainable development and greater opportunities for all." Former President of Slovenia Danilo Turk in his address thanked conference hosts the Government of Qatar for providing excellent working conditions.

"The adoption of the Doha Declaration is a very significant act in the process of not only combating crime, but also a contribution in developing comprehensive development strategy for the United Nations," said Turk.

In his speech, UN Assistant Secretary-General for the Rule of Law and Security Institutions in the Department of Peacekeeping Operations Dimitry Titov said, "The rule of law is at the forefront of our collective agenda as demonstrated by this international conference.

"UN legislative bodies, the UN General Assembly and the Security Council have underscored again and again this infallibility of the rule of law. This recognition is reflected in the unprecedented level attention paid to the issue by the Security Council decisions. In 2012 alone 93% of its resolution integrated elements of rule of law."
