The Kazakh infrastructure sector is facing some challenges stemming from sluggish economic growth due to falling oil revenues a weakened Russian rouble and a devaluated tenge that will have particularly severe implications for the residential and non-residential sub-sector. Nonetheless the preparation for the 2017 World Expo and associated governmental funding progra m m e s are boosting investment especially in the transport sub-sector while the energy sub-sector continues to profit from the countries growing natural resource base however slightly impeded through decreasing oil prices .

* Ongoing external developments associated with decreasing oil prices the economic crisis and a falling Russian rouble due to the Western sanction regimes could force the Kazakh central bank to further devaluate the currency in the near future. We already highlighted the downside to our construction industry forecasts from the February 2014 currency devaluation. While the devaluation provided a boost to net exports it had adverse effects on private consumption levels. As such demand for housing commercial and industrial construction is set to remain subdued over the short term.
* The restart of the giant Kashagan field expected for H215 at the earliest continues to be doubtful. An investigation into the production challenges at Kashagan determined in early 2014 that the two 55-mile long offshore pipeline sections will need to be replaced. New materials able to withstand the highly corrosive hydrogen sulphide gas - the cause of the production problems - will need to be used. A first step to save the project was taken in mid-2014 when the group appointed an ExxonMobil executive to take over the venture. The step did however not imply a takeover by Exxon as the operator of the field which continues to be a joint venture. It remains uncertain when the project will be up and running again.
