Socialist Group in EP calls for special meeting of EU leaders on Gaza

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) The leader of the Group of Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament, Gianni Pittella, said Sunday he has sent a letter to the President of the European Council, Herman Van Rompuy, on the dramatic situation in the Gaza strip. "We demand an extraordinary meeting of the European Council (EU summit) to be held as soon as possible to discuss the EU strategy vis-a-vis the Gaza conflict. The European Union should take concrete measures in order to stop the war going on in this region, including the adoption of an arms embargo," said the head of the second-largest group in the EP.

"Sanctions can no longer be considered as taboo but as possible means of putting pressure on both, the Hamas and Israel side, in order to stop civil casualties. The situation in Gaza is becoming unsustainable. Humanitarian conditions are deteriorating," said Pittella.

"Public resentment against this conflict has reached the streets of European cities, with the risk of more riots and protests," he warned.

Pittella concluded by calling for a UN Resolution to establish a humanitarian corridor along the Gaza Strip.

"The European Union should play a proactive role in the peace process and work immediately for a United Nations Resolution to establish a humanitarian corridor along the Gaza Strip in order to help civilians with first aid. It is time to act before it is too late. Business as usual is no longer acceptable," he added.
