More than 40 Dead 80 Missing in Afghan Flash Floods


(MENAFN- Qatar News Agency) Kabul April 25 - More than 40 people were killed in flash floods in northern Afghanistan that left 80 missing an official said Friday.

"We have so far found 26 bodies including 15 children and five women in Sheberghan city" Abdul Rahman Mahmoudi deputy governor for Jowzjan province told German Press Agency dpa.

Another seven bodies were found in Qosh Tepa district and about 10 in Darzab and Khoja Do Koh districts after overnight floods due to heavy rain he said.

"Nine villages I saw in Darzab district were destroyed" and many others damaged across the three affected districts he said.

"The air force has allocated two helicopters to rescue the people from the flood-hit areas but I think it is not enough to evacuate thousands of villagers." Roads to the areas were cut off and around 5000 people driven from their homes he said.

"This flood is unprecedented in the past 30 years." he aded.
