British Safety Council presents the Sword of Honour and Globe of Honour for health, safety and environmental excellence

(MENAFNEditorial) The British Safety Council presented the Sword of Honour and Globe of Honour to 2013 winners at its celebratory awards luncheon at the Goldsmiths' Hall in the City of London on 29 November. These awards, for health and safety management and environmental management excellence respectively, are made in recognition of the exemplary performance by the winning organisations and their employees. Presenting the awards Lynda Armstrong OBE, chair of the Trustees of the British Safety Council, said: "Our warmest congratulations to the eight of our member organisations who have won the Globe of Honour and the 68 organisations who have won the Sword of Honour. Seven organisations won both the Sword and Globe of Honour. Our warmest congratulations to all of the winning organisations and all of your employees. "What the awards being bestowed today enable us to do is recognise and celebrate the excellence of the winning organisations and your employees in managing health, safety and environmental risks. "The standard we have set in order to win the Sword of Honour and Globe of Honour is high. We intend that the winning standard will remain high, with the bar being raised every year, to ensure that the role of the awards in driving continued improvement is sustained." The winning organisations (listed below) came from a wide range of sectors including construction, custodial services, education and training, energy generation and distribution, financial services, food and drink, leisure, logistics, major hazards, manufacturing, motor vehicle manufacture, offshore oil and gas, retail and transport. Lynda Armstrong added: "The winning organisations are united in their shared belief that proportionate and competent risk management brings both financial and social benefits to their organisations. Managing health, safety and environmental risks effectively does not need to be onerous; quite the opposite." The British Safety Council paid tribute to those seven organisations who won the 'double' – both the Sword of Honour and Globe of Honour. These were: AWE Construction; Dubai Electricity and Water Authority; Hargreaves Industrial Services (Liverpool Bulk Handling Terminal); Mace Ltd (Technology and Renewable Energy) Horizon Centre; Reliance Gas Transportation Infrastructure Ltd; Unipart Consumer Logistics – Cowley; and United Biscuits – Midlands Distribution Centre. The 2013 awards mark the 34th consecutive year of the British Safety Council's Sword of Honour, awarded for health and safety management excellence, and the fourth year of the Globe of Honour, awarded for excellence in environmental management. The winners had achieved the maximum five stars in the British Safety Council's audit scheme in the period August 2012 – July 2013. They have also demonstrated to an independent adjudication panel a culture of best practice in health and safety or environmental management throughout the business – from the shopfloor to the boardroom. The winning organisations are drawn from countries such as Germany, Jersey, India, the Middle and Far East and the United Kingdom, demonstrating the global spirit of the awards.
