Saudi Arabia invites Lebanon's PM to visit Kingdom

(MENAFN) Saudi Arabia has extended an invitation to Prime Minister Saad Hariri to visit the kingdom, the premier's office said Monday.

The invitation came during a meeting between Saudi envoy Nizar al-Aloula and Hariri, the first between the Lebanese premier and a Saudi official since tensions escalated between the two countries in the wake of the now-reversed resignation of Hariri.

In a statement, Hariri said he will visit the kingdom "as soon as possible" and described the talks with al-Aloula as "excellent."

The meeting comes amid media reports that the kingdom, a strong rival of Iran, is vying to revive the March 14 alliance in an effort to thwart a commanding win by Tehran-backed group Hezbollah and its allies in the upcoming parliamentary elections scheduled for May 6.
