An unemployed Egyptian man allegedly abducted seven Asian domestic workers from Dubai International Airport after falsely claiming he was a staff member from their recruitment agency.

The 29-year-old took the women's passports and mobile phones, then took them to several apartments in Dubai, reported. They were offered to several families as domestic staff.

The incident occurred on July 6, 2017, but charges were not laid until August 27 and the case has only just come to the Court of First Instance.

One of the victims, 35-year-old Indonesian maid, said she arrived in the United Arab Emirates with two other women when they were approached by the unidentified man.

"From the way he checked our papers, we believed he had verified our identities and then he asked us to accompany him. He took us to a flat in Dubai. He kept us there and told us we can't go outside.

"After he locked us inside, an Ethiopian woman came daily to give us food and do the cleaning work. We stayed there for three days and then that Ethiopian woman forgot to lock the door. We ran out and as we hailed a cab we called our office. The cab drove us to the recruitment agency in Ajman," said the woman, who was not named.

Two other Indonesians aged 28 and 31 gave similar accounts in court. It is not clear when the women were able to escape, or whether the women are all Indonesians.

The court was told that the man also embezzled money from a number of men after showing them forged employment contracts for the maids. He faces charges of kidnap, false imprisonment, fraud, theft and forgery.

The next hearing is on January 23.
