Second 5.2 Magnitude Earthquake Jolts China's Guangxi
(MENAFN) A 5.2 magnitude earthquake struck south China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region late Monday, marking the second seismic event of equal force to shake the area within a single day.
The tremor hit the Liunan District of Liuzhou City at 9:44 pm local time (1344 GMT), according to the China Earthquake Networks Center, as reported by a state-run news agency. The quake registered at a depth of eight kilometers (4.9 miles). No immediate casualties or structural damage were reported.
The strike followed a nearly identical event hours earlier — a 5.2 magnitude quake that rattled Liuzhou at 12:21 am (1621 GMT Sunday), leaving a trail of destruction in its wake.
The earlier tremor proved far more devastating. According to a state broadcaster, 14 buildings collapsed and more than 7,000 residents were forced to evacuate. Emergency response teams were rapidly mobilized to conduct rescue operations, as both regional and national authorities activated Level-III and Level-IV emergency response measures.
Two people were confirmed killed and one person remains missing in the aftermath of the first earthquake.
