Israeli Minister Ben-Gvir Forces Entry into Al-Aqsa Mosque
(MENAFN) Israel's far-right National Security Minister, Itamar Ben-Gvir, once again entered the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound in occupied East Jerusalem on Sunday, this time under heavy police protection. According to a Palestinian news agency, this provocative act comes as Israel continues its restrictions on access to the mosque for worshippers, amidst ongoing violations of Islamic and Christian holy sites in the area.
Ben-Gvir's incursion, typical of previous actions, was not publicly announced in advance. Israeli ministers are required to obtain approval from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office before entering the Al-Aqsa compound. Despite widespread condemnation from Arab, Islamic, and international communities, Ben-Gvir persists with these provocations.
Al-Aqsa Mosque, considered the third-holiest site in Islam, is also claimed by Jews, who refer to the area as the Temple Mount, citing its historical significance as the site of two ancient Jewish temples.
This latest raid follows an Israeli military action on Saturday, during Holy Saturday observances at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. Israeli forces turned parts of East Jerusalem, including the Old City and Damascus Gate, into a militarized zone, erecting checkpoints and further tightening restrictions.
