Portland anti-ICE demonstrators conflict with federal agents
(MENAFN) Over the weekend, protesters in Portland, Oregon, clashed with federal officers and police outside a detention facility for undocumented immigrants.
The confrontation escalated when demonstrators, including some wearing black and associated with Antifa, set off fireworks toward officers, who retaliated with pepper balls and tear gas.
For several weeks, activists have been gathering outside the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) center, obstructing access and protesting President Donald Trump’s immigration enforcement policies.
The latest outbreak of violence came after a series of peaceful ‘No Kings’ marches held across several cities, including Portland.
On Monday, a federal appeals court granted Trump permission to deploy the National Guard in Oregon while ongoing legal challenges continue. The president maintained that the deployment was vital to contain unrest and criminal activity in Democrat-led cities.
Oregon Attorney General Dan Rayfield criticized the decision, calling it unjustified and warning that it had set the nation “on a dangerous path.”
