(MENAFN) Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy has been officially informed that he will begin serving his prison sentence on October 21, following his conviction in the high-profile Libyan financing scandal tied to his 2007 presidential campaign, French media reported Monday.

The notification, issued at the request of the National Financial Prosecutor's Office (PNF), included details of his incarceration conditions. However, for security and privacy reasons, specifics about the arrangements will remain confidential.

A source close to the investigation, speaking to media, indicated that Sarkozy is likely to serve his sentence at La Santé Prison in Paris. The time leading up to October 21 will provide him the opportunity to settle his personal and professional matters.

Once imprisoned, his legal team will have the option to petition for his release before the Court of Appeals, which is mandated to deliver a decision within two months.

On September 25, the Paris Criminal Court handed down a five-year prison sentence to Sarkozy for criminal conspiracy in connection with alleged Libyan funding of his 2007 campaign. Despite his appeal, the court ordered immediate enforcement of the sentence, highlighting the "exceptional seriousness" of the charges.

Sarkozy is set to become the first former French president in modern history to serve time behind bars.
