South Korean President Calls for Encouraging Responsible AI Use

(MENAFN) South Korean President Lee Jae Myung on Wednesday appealed to the international community to "unite" in order to guarantee the "responsible use" of artificial intelligence (AI).

He also urged the UN Security Council to take part in shaping a coordinated worldwide response.

While presiding over an open session at the Council on AI, international peace, and security, Lee — the first South Korean president to lead such a discussion — encouraged governments, academic institutions, the private sector, and civil society to collaborate and advance innovation directed at "AI for all" and "inclusive and human-centric AI," according to a news agency in Seoul.

The demand for cross-border cooperation is expanding as worries grow about the potential misuse of AI and other advanced technologies in ways that could endanger global security and fundamental rights.

"To turn the changes of the AI era -- where light and shadow coexist -- into opportunities, it is essential for the international community to unite and uphold the principle of 'responsible use of AI,'" Lee stressed.

Reaffirming that Seoul will assume a "greater" role in dealing with AI-related risks, he highlighted the Council’s duty to analyze the evolving global security environment and create joint strategies.

As the upcoming chair of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit, the South Korean leader stated that Seoul will introduce a worldwide initiative to ensure AI progress supports the advancement of humanity.

"Eighty years ago, the UN's central concern at its founding was how the international community would manage the emerging threat of nuclear weapons," Lee remarked.

"Now it is time to explore new governance structures to address the new challenges and threats posed by AI."
