Vehicle crashes into Russian Consulate in Australia


(MENAFN) A man has been taken into custody after driving a car through the gates of the Russian Consulate General in Sydney on Monday morning, injuring a police officer during the incident, according to local media.

New South Wales Police reported that officers were called to the consulate on Fullerton Street in Woollahra around 8 a.m. following reports of a suspicious vehicle in the driveway. When police approached the driver of a white Toyota Kluger SUV, he allegedly sped forward, crashing through the gates and onto the consulate grounds.

The 39-year-old suspect was arrested at the scene and taken to Surry Hills police station for questioning. Authorities confirmed that no staff from the consulate were harmed in the incident.

A 24-year-old police officer sustained a hand injury while responding and received treatment from paramedics. No additional injuries were reported.

Footage from the scene showed the damaged SUV on the lawn of the consulate with its front windows shattered as officers inspected the vehicle. Police have not yet revealed the motive behind the act and stated that an investigation is still underway.
