Türkiye Restores Direct Road Transport with Syria

(MENAFN) Türkiye has officially restored direct international road transport with Syria after a 13-year suspension, Transport Minister Abdulkadir Uraloglu announced Friday.

"After a 13-year hiatus, direct international road transport between Türkiye and Syria has resumed. Yesterday, four trucks passed through the Cilvegozu Border Gate, traveling from Mersin to Aleppo, and three trucks from Idlib to Mersin," Uraloglu confirmed in a statement.

He clarified that, prior to this restart, transportation between the two nations had been limited to transit operations for some time.

According to the minister, transport activities on this route ground to a halt amid the Syrian civil war, which erupted in 2011. For years, cargo crossing the border relied on transshipment rather than direct delivery.

Following recent changes in Syria, Türkiye began efforts to reinstate the route in December 2024. Uraloglu highlighted the signing of a road transportation memorandum of understanding with Syria during the Global Transport Corridors Forum in Istanbul from June 27-29.

On July 9, officials convened a technical meeting at the Cilvegozu Border Gate to finalize conditions for border passage, marking the launch of on-the-ground operations.

'Transportation to Jordan, Saudi Arabia to become faster, more economical'
Uraloglu highlighted that with the reopening of the route, trucks bearing Turkish and Syrian license plates will be able to travel directly to their destinations, removing the previous requirement to transfer cargo at the border.

He added, "Comparing August 2024 to August 2025, there was a 50% increase in our transportation to Syria. This trend will continue to increase. With the reopening of the Syria route, transportation from cities like Hatay, Gaziantep, and Mersin to Jordan and Saudi Arabia will become faster. This step will invigorate not only our exporters but also the regional economy."

This strategic development follows the collapse of the Bashar al-Assad regime in December 2024.

Assad, Syria’s leader for nearly 25 years, fled to Russia last December, ending the Ba'ath Party’s nearly six-decade hold on power since 1963. In January, a transitional government led by Ahmad al-Sharaa was established, marking a new chapter in Syrian governance.
