Denmark summons US envoy due to supposed Greenland impact campaign
(MENAFN) Denmark has summoned the top U.S. diplomat in the country following media reports alleging covert American influence operations in Greenland, a semi-autonomous Danish territory.
According to Denmark’s national broadcaster DR, at least three individuals connected to former U.S. President Donald Trump are believed to have participated in efforts to sway political opinion in Greenland. Citing eight sources, including security officials, DR reported that the suspected campaign aimed to undermine ties between Greenland and Denmark and possibly promote a movement for Greenlandic independence. One operative was reportedly compiling a list of locals who might support secession. It remains unclear whether these actions were carried out independently or directed by U.S. authorities.
In response, Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen condemned any foreign interference in Denmark’s internal affairs and summoned the U.S. chargé d’affaires, Mark Stroh, for an explanation. With no current U.S. ambassador posted in Copenhagen, Stroh is the highest-ranking American diplomat in the country.
Denmark’s domestic intelligence agency, PET, has also raised concerns, warning of efforts to exploit real or perceived tensions between Denmark and Greenland. The agency said it has increased its presence in Greenland to counter potential foreign influence, whether through operatives or disinformation campaigns.
Former President Trump has previously expressed interest in acquiring Greenland, describing it as a strategically important location due to its mineral resources and Arctic positioning. He has even suggested military means could be used to pursue such ambitions.
These developments come amid intensifying geopolitical competition in the Arctic, with both Russia and China also seeking greater influence. Russian President Vladimir Putin has referred to the Arctic as a region with massive potential for trade and economic development.
