(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) BEIJING, Aug 31 (KUNA) -- Chinese President Xi Jinping said on Sunday that the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) is responsible for maintaining peace and promoting development in a "turbulent" world.
The Chinese President emphasized in his speech during the Tianjin Summit, which gathered about 20 world leaders, that the summit aims to enhance cooperation between different parties, unify the strength of the global south, and advance the progress of human civilization.
President Xi Jinping held several meetings with world leaders, promoting cooperation and development between them in different sectors.
The summit coincides with the attendance of high-level officials, including Russian President Vladimir Putin, Turkish President Recep Erdogan, and North Korean Leader Kim Jong Un, indicating the strategic importance of the SCO, which comprises of 10 member states, along with 16 partner states, constituting nearly half of the world's population, and more than 23 percent of the global GDP.
This year's summit is described as the most important since the organization's establishment in 2001, as it is taking place amid many crises, directly affecting its members. (end)
