(MENAFN) Typhoon Wipha struck northern Vietnam early Tuesday, unleashing heavy rainfall, widespread power blackouts, and significant damage to infrastructure, according to a local news agency.

The storm made landfall along the coast between Hung Yen and Ninh Binh provinces, bringing sustained winds up to 88 km/h—equivalent to force 8-9 on the Beaufort scale—and gusts reaching level 11, the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting reported.

At approximately 8:30 a.m., a suspension bridge in Dien Bien province partially gave way after days of relentless rain, injuring four individuals, media reported.

Power outages were confirmed in areas of Tien Hai commune within Hung Yen province.

In response, residents were observed lining up with fuel containers at gas stations to secure fuel for generators, local news source media noted.

Meanwhile, central provinces like Thanh Hoa and Nghe An experienced rainfall between 150 to 200 mm, prompting local authorities to issue warnings about increased risks of landslides and flash floods.
