UN Chief Urges Expanded Humanitarian Aid into Gaza
(MENAFN) UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Friday issued an urgent plea for expanded humanitarian assistance into Gaza, along with improved security conditions to ensure the safe distribution of aid.
Guterres warned that Palestinians in Gaza are enduring what he described as possibly the most brutal period of an already devastating conflict. He pointed out that Israel had restricted the entry of critical international aid for nearly 80 consecutive days.
While Israel has since permitted some humanitarian shipments, Guterres criticized the scale of assistance as grossly inadequate. “A teaspoon of aid when a flood of assistance is required,” he told reporters.
Nearly 400 trucks have recently been cleared to pass through the Kerem Shalom/Karem Abu Salem border crossing. However, only the contents of 115 trucks have actually been distributed. Guterres emphasized that none of these supplies have reached northern Gaza, which remains under siege.
The leading global organization monitoring hunger has reported that every individual in Gaza is currently facing the threat of famine. Families are being deprived of essential needs, all while the world observes these events unfold in real time, stated Guterres.
He further condemned what he called overwhelming logistical and political hurdles. "The needs are massive and the obstacles are staggering. Strict quotas are being imposed on the goods we distribute -- along with unnecessary delay procedures. Other essentials, including fuel, shelter, cooking gas, and water purification supplies, are prohibited," he stated.
