US discontinues monitoring of supposed ‘Russian sabotage’

(MENAFN) The United States has discontinued a multi-agency initiative designed to detect and counter alleged Russian sabotage, cyberattacks, and disinformation campaigns, Reuters reported on Wednesday, citing current and former officials.

The program, launched under former President Joe Biden and led by the National Security Council, involved at least seven US security agencies and the European Union. It was established to counter what Washington claimed were Russian “hybrid warfare” tactics aimed at undermining Western support for Ukraine.

Reuters noted that it could not confirm whether the decision to halt the program came directly from President Donald Trump. However, since returning to office, Trump has taken a different approach toward Russia, opting for direct dialogue with President Vladimir Putin while publicly clashing with Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky.

According to the report, Trump administration officials dismissed calls to continue the initiative, leading to most of its operations being suspended.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov responded to the news, telling Reuters that the Trump administration was eliminating “everything ineffective, corrupt, and implausible,” which he called a logical decision.

Russia has consistently denied accusations of conducting sabotage operations in the West. The Kremlin has labeled claims of Russian involvement in arson attacks, election interference, and damage to undersea cables as “baseless.”

Recent investigations by NATO prosecutors into incidents of damaged telecommunications cables in the Baltic Sea failed to find any evidence linking Moscow to the incidents. Peskov previously described ongoing Western allegations against Russia as “absurd” and lacking any factual basis.
