Duterte’s child pledges to ‘fight back’ against father’s ICC detention

(MENAFN) Sebastian ‘Baste’ Duterte, the son of former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte, has pledged to “fight back” against his father’s detention by the International Criminal Court (ICC). Currently serving as the mayor of Davao City, he urged supporters to “stand up” against what he claims is an unlawful arrest.

Rodrigo Duterte, 79, was taken into custody by Philippine authorities at Manila’s international airport last week and extradited to The Hague, where he faces trial for alleged crimes against humanity linked to his controversial war on drugs.

According to the ICC, Duterte orchestrated “death squads” responsible for extrajudicial killings of suspected drug dealers and users between 2016 and 2022. His son, along with other officials, has condemned the arrest, warning that it sets a “dangerous precedent.”

The ICC launched its investigation into Duterte’s anti-drug campaign in 2018, following accusations of police brutality and unlawful executions. While activists argue that innocent civilians, including children, were killed, law enforcement officials maintain they acted in self-defense. Official records cite 6,200 deaths, though independent estimates suggest a much higher toll.

Critics argue that Duterte’s arrest is illegal, as the Philippines withdrew from the ICC in 2019 under his leadership. However, the court claims it retains jurisdiction over alleged crimes committed while the country was still a member.

Duterte’s legal team has filed a petition accusing the Philippine government of “kidnapping” and asserting that his extradition violated both national law and ICC procedures.
