Court detains defendant in Odesa activist’s murder
(MENAFN) The Kyiv District Court of Odesa has ordered Serhiy Shalaev, a suspect in the murder of Demian Hanul, to be held in detention without bail as a pre-trial measure.
At the court session, it was disclosed that Serhiy Shalaev, 47, holds the rank of senior lieutenant in Ukraine’s armed forces and was assigned to Odesa’s 28th Brigade, known as the Knights of the Winter Campaign.
The brigade reported that he was reassigned from military unit A0139 to their command on July 13, 2024, and was designated to the reserve division for territorial defense personnel.
Officials from the brigade added: "Following his transfer, he was undergoing medical treatment for most of the time. He did not participate in combat missions and failed to return from leave, leading to his classification as a reserve company member since February 22, 2025."
During the court session, Shalaev was seen wearing protective gear, including a bulletproof vest and helmet.
A news agency earlier reported that on March 14, public activist Demian Hanul was shot and killed in central Odesa. Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko later confirmed that National Police Chief Ivan Vyhivskyi had gone to Odesa to oversee the investigation, refuting rumors that the perpetrator was wearing military attire.
