EU clarifies its stance on Ukraine peace agreement

(MENAFN) The EU has made it clear that it does not support a ceasefire between Ukraine and Russia unless a comprehensive peace agreement is reached first. The bloc considers an unconditional ceasefire "dangerous," according to an anonymous European official cited by Reuters. Several EU members expressed this stance during an emergency summit in Paris on Monday, convened by French President Emmanuel Macron. The meeting followed Washington’s announcement of the beginning of US-Russia peace talks in Riyadh on Tuesday, though neither Ukraine nor the EU was invited to participate.

The summit, attended by leaders from Germany, the UK, Italy, Poland, Spain, the Netherlands, and Denmark, as well as EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and NATO chief Mark Rutte, resulted in a commitment to provide Ukraine with the security guarantees it needs to start the peace process. However, the specifics of these guarantees were not detailed. Ukraine has previously called for NATO membership as part of such guarantees, but the US has rejected this, citing Moscow’s opposition to Ukraine joining the military alliance as a core issue of the conflict.

French President Macron supported the EU's position in a post on X, stating that a "strong and lasting peace" in Ukraine must be accompanied by credible security guarantees. He urged cooperation between the EU, the US, and Ukraine as essential for resolving the conflict.

While some EU officials criticized the US for excluding the EU from the peace talks, not all EU members oppose the US-led initiative. Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto labeled the Paris summit participants as “warmongers,” calling for their exclusion from any peace efforts.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova dismissed the EU’s criticism of the US-Russia talks, describing it as an unprecedented and almost panicked reaction in international relations.
