(MENAFN) Russian lawmaker Vitaly Milonov has controversially suggested that Greenland, an autonomous territory of Denmark, should join the Russian Federation, citing linguistic and cultural similarities between Greenland’s indigenous people and Russia’s Inuit population. Milonov’s comments come after US President Donald Trump’s remarks about potentially annexing Greenland, which were rejected by both Greenland's pro-independence leaders and Denmark.
In an interview with Russian media outlet Gazeta.ru, Milonov argued that Russia, as a nation with a stable economy and Political system, is the best suited to support the indigenous Greenlanders, whom he described as part of a "common ethnic group" with Russia's Inuit population. He pointed out that both groups speak similar dialects.
Milonov, known for his outspoken views on "traditional Russian values" and opposition to Western liberal ideologies, suggested that Greenland could become a new subject of the Russian Federation, possibly as the "Greenlandic People’s Republic." He claimed that Greenland is deprived of protection under Danish rule and would benefit from Russian support.
Greenland, a former Danish colony, gained home rule in 1979 and is seeking independence, according to its Prime Minister, Mute Egede, who emphasized the island's desire for autonomy. A referendum is expected, but a timeline has not been specified. Egede reaffirmed that Greenland does not wish to be controlled by Denmark or the United States.
