KABUL (Pajhwok): The Serbian prime Minister has announced his resignation amid nationwide protests over the deadly collapse of a railway station canopy, the BBC reported on Wednesday.
Fifteen people had lost their lives in November when a concrete canopy at a railway station collapsed in the city of Novi Sad.
Since then, there have been massive demonstrations - particularly by students– demanding accountability and protesting against corruption.
Premier Milos Vucevic told journalists on Tuesday his decision to stand down was aimed at keeping tensions from mounting further.
Following an emergency meeting with the government, President Aleksandar Vucic said he would decide within the next 10 days on whether to order parliamentary polls or establish a new government.
Vucic said he was mulling over“three or four names” to succeed Vucevic. The president explained he was ready to consider other suggestions as well.
“My decision to resign ... is final. I had a long meeting with the president. We discussed everything and he accepted my decision,” the prime minister was quoted as saying by TASS.
Continuing student protests were being orchestrated from abroad in an attempt to precipitate a coup d'état, he claimed, deploring the blockades of highways, railroads and bridges.
