G7 Affirms Support For Inclusive Political Transition In Syria

PARIS, Dec 12 (KUNA) -- Members of the G7 affirmed on Thursday support towards an inclusive political transition in Syria in line with UNSC resolution 2254.
According to a statement, the G7, currently chaired by Italy, expressed "full support for an inclusive Syrian-led and Syrian-owned political transition process in the spirit of the principles of UN Security Council Resolution 2254"
It added that the G7 stood "ready to support a transition process that leads to credible, inclusive, and non-sectarian governance."
The G7 called for the "respect for the rule of law, universal human rights... the protection of all Syrians, including religious and ethnic minorities, transparency and accountability."
The statement affirmed, "The G7 will work with and fully support a future Syrian government that abides by those standards and results from that process."
It called for preserving "Syria's territorial integrity and national unity, and respect its independence and sovereignty."
G7 leaders are expected to meet virtually on Friday to discuss a variety of important regional and international issues including the Russian-Ukraine war and developments in the Middle East. (end)
