Iran produces significant honey, sets growth targets

(MENAFN) The deputy director of Ilam province’s Agriculture Department reported that approximately 1,500 tons of honey are produced annually in the province. Sahrif Khodamoradi mentioned that Ilam is home to 1,900 beekeeping facilities and 190,000 bee colonies.

He explained that these apiaries provide both direct and indirect employment for over 6,000 individuals in the region.

According to a representative from Iran’s Ministry of Agriculture, the national average honey production per capita is 1.415 kilograms.

Mohammad-Ebrahim Hassan-Nejad, the deputy minister for livestock product affairs, also stated that the per capita honey consumption in the country is 1.397 kilograms.

Additionally, he highlighted that 155,000 people are employed in the country’s apiaries, which operate in 94,932 different locations.

As per data from the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), Iran ranks as the third-largest honey producer globally.

The head of the Animal Science Research Institute noted that honey production in the country should be enhanced by an additional three to four kilograms per colony.

Mokhtar Mohajer explained, “Under the Seventh National Development Plan (2022-2026), honey production must increase by at least three to four kilograms per colony, considering the variety of plants and pasture areas available in the country.”
